Modern Foreign languages
Intent
At John Shelton our aim is to develop lifelong language learners. We want children to enjoy learning French: becoming passionate, curious and confident language learners who are ready for the next phase of their education. We also help our children to develop a basic understanding of French culture and to know about other places in the world where the language is spoken.
Implementation
Lessons are planned using the Language Angels scheme of work. The lessons are designed to motivate, captivate and interest children from the first moment. They have clear, achievable objectives and incorporate different learning styles.
We help children develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning French:
-
Speaking
-
Listening
-
Reading
-
Writing
-
Grammar
Each class has a timetabled lesson of at least thirty minutes per week.
Impact
In MFL, progress is measured through children’s ability to know, remember and use vocabulary and language structures in French. The Language Angels units are structured in such a way that children revisit key language concepts frequently; the order is planned carefully with increasing levels of difficulty from Y3 to Y6.
Children will be able to display their knowledge through their speaking skills, listening, reading and written work in books. They will be able to use previously modelled language structures to speak in sentences with correct pronunciation.
